Oliver Asks for More

The room in which the boys were fed was a large stone hall, with a large pot at one end. The warden, helped by two women, served the soup from this pot at meal times. Each boy was allowed one bowl of soup and no more, except on special holidays when he was given another 60 grams of bread. The bowls never needed washing, as the boys cleaned them with their spoons, trying to eat every bit of soup. This never took very long, as the spoons were almost as large as the bowls. When they had cleaned their bowls in this way, they would sit staring at the pot with eager eyes, as if they wanted to eat it. Boys usually have excellent appetites.

An Unforgettable Teacher
 
Never will I forget my English teacher—Mr Chen, whose unique teaching style and wisdom have changed the way we think about English learning.
 
What impresses me most is his enthusiasm. In class, he seemed to be energetic, frequently swinging his hands and varying his musical tone of voice to help him with explanations. It was his sense of humor that made the learning process more enjoyable. He held a firm belief that class hours wouldn't be perfect without at least one loud laugh shared by the students and teachers. Besides, he instructed us how to learn English in a creative way.

【摘  要】在初中生的作文中经常有很多不必要的简单词汇重复,这削弱了文章的连贯性,降低了文章的质量。教师应引导学生灵活运用同义词、反义词、派生词,以及用one和do分别替代名词和动词这四种写作衔接技巧,避免文章用词单一。

在初中生的英语作文中有很多不必要的单词重复。比如,某个单词在一个句子中或几个相邻的句子间反复出现,其中绝大部分情况不是需要刻意重复该词,而是学生不会用不同的表达方法。这样的重复使文章松散拖沓、语言单调啰嗦,降低了文章的质量。因此,笔者在写作教学中围绕衔接这个主题,介绍一些相关的方法技巧,帮助学生避免不必要的词汇重复。

Danger of Harmful Waste to Mankind
 
Besides giving off gases and dusts(灰尘) into the air, humans produce waste that is poured on the environment. Often, this waste produced by major industries and people is harmful to both nature and human life.
 
One of the main causes of the large amount of dangerous waste is that people do not realize how large a problem it is. Because it can be simply removed and sent to a landfill(废渣填埋场), the problem is often believed to end there. In addition, industries have often shown an unwillingness to find ways to deal with dangerous waste because of the related expenses.

Music without Boundaries
 
Each time a medal was presented to a winner at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the award music was played. The music was written by Tan Dun, a world-famous composer.
 
Born in 1957 in central Hunan, China, Tan Dun grew up near the LiuyangRiver. When he was very young, Tan showed an interest in music. He loves the sounds of the rushing water and the blowing wind because, to him, the best music comes from nature.

A Student of African Wildlife
 

It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over GombeNational Park in East Africa. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Then we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. However, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her babies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night.
